RE: How to plain a trip?

Thanks to ALL who replied > I,ve taken the advice and lowered my daily mileage to 300 max! Yes I'm retired and Yes I wanna get to the RV park long before dark. It all seems a little hard to me, (The plaining thingy) I'm a little disorganized to say the least !! Was worried about reservations and getting there on time.My toyhauler has 3 slides and need to have two out to use the living/sleeping area's and know some places like, Rest areas, W Worlds don't like to see you looking like you've moved in so winging it seemed not to be the thing to do, where do I park and paying for a spot I didn't use.... plus my 60 ft of truck n 5er can't just park anywhere. Thanks again everyone ....... leaving next month for 3 weeks ,,,, I'll let ya know how it turns out! victorydave

How to plain a trip?

Okay! I'm starting longer trips (RV & Truck shake down is done) were ready! Planinng a trip from Michigan to South Dakota using a Coast to Coast resorts for nighty 2 day stays then move on to Rapid City for a 2 week stay. From there I'm not sure? I'm trying to plan this with 400 mile days max, got a book of resorts, got'a GPS but I guess theres alot of work in between. Daily mileage about right? or plan on less? do I take major roads, secondary roads for more adventure ( my RV is over 13 foot tall, so I'm not sure about secondaries)? I guess what I'm asking is how do you plan a trip? coast to coast has a lame site that relys on a old Map Quest program that doesn't even show mileage. Garman GPS has a nice program that I'm planing to use and just plug in all the addresses of each resort. That should do, But anyone got a better idea? Thanks victory dave

RE: Smelly 5th Wheel, please advise

Yes look to the drains, but first check and make sure your VENTS for the drains are open! Some have a vent up under the sink, the newer ones take the vent right to the roof (like your house) Also check for dead animals in every part inside and out of the RV and if your sewer vents are on the roof make sure nothing crawed in and died. victorydave

RE: Snowbirds - what are we going to do about next year??

Yep retired last year and planed a big trip this year... Now we have'ta slow that down and put some trips off. If you understood why fuel is so high you'd know it ain't gonna pass anytime soon! I think we are seeing the NEW standard for fuel prices being set right now, You may see 3 bucks at the low but higher in the summer and 5 bucks before this year ends heck before august! American's life style is about to change ........ for a long time and nobody sees it coming! You Will victorydave

RE: Fifth wheel hitch for a F450?

Gota 20.5 K PullRite in my 2008 F-450 no problems .. Left the old rails in the 05 F350. Gotta use PullRites Rail kit for now, No after market universal Rail kits could be found for da Ford/hitch. victorydave

RE: 1st rv-nervous- now what

The dealer should of given you a starter kit, Yes it'll be junk but you'll know that first couple of times out...then go to camping world and up-grade that stuff and buy lots of things you found you needed but didn't have. Also on this fourm there are lots of list (look under "trailer packing lists" for a start. But most of all go some place close! so's you can run home to get what you forgot or found you need while camping... in about 6 mos of talking to others and seeing what they got you'll get it. then it's some-more thips to camping world. But most of all relax and injoy!!!!!!! victorydave

RE: Why are Powerstroke Diesels so Loud

I question why all the diesels are so loud....although, the fuel going above 4 bucks a gallon has quieted some in my area. :) Yep! my 08 6.4 is very quite, the only thing I here now is the tires (when the window is down) Oh yeah it's also an EPA law now, they all had to get quite-errr victorydave

RE: Ford vs Freightliner

Where did my post go on this??? Well I'll try one more time > I almost went the route your considering but heres what i came up with, First besides my motorcycles my truck will be the only thing I have to drive (wife still works and has the small car). I just can't see me taken the Freightliner M2 to the store or buying yet another car. All the big trucks didn't have a very nice interiors in them and the custom interior'ed ones were much more $$$$. True the fuel economy is about the same and you can carry a whole bunch of fuel, but you can't take it to the quick oil change places, you can't take it to the quarter car wash (unless they have an outside bay) Yes you can take it to a truck wash and pay by the foot!, Limited to where I can take it to get fixed or get parts to do it myself, I know how much it cost to do a brake job on my F450 ( how many more times does it cost to do a one on a Freightliner M2)? For example an injector for my ford is around 400 bucks, one for the M2 is around 12 to 1800 bucks in your hand.. true the M2 motor is gonna last near 800,000 miles. My Ford F450 has a turning radius around 16 feet smaller than an F350 , really nice in tight places. It's rated to pull a 20K 5er with a 4.30:1 axle and if i would've gotten the 4.88:1 axle option a 24 K trailer what more do ya wanna pull? I could do 2 hours worth of pros n cons but the loosing of my truck (and it's bed) as a near daily drive is the biggie for me! victorydave

RE: What Else Should I Do To My "99 V10 F250?

Yeah ol'yeller add the powersteering fluid change and I think you got it! Unless your considering a new bigger trailer a 4.11:1 should be alot nicer on the wiz-way but a 4.30 fits my diesel just right if I stay below 62 MPH.( no big turbo input keeps MPG up. victorydave

RE: Pulling the Raptor 3814

Davidm49 said >I have the Raptor 3814 and although I think you can do whatever you want, after close to 6000 miles of towing, I would not tow this with anything less than what I have today (08-F350 Powerstroke DRW) and if I could afford it, I would buy a MDT Hi David....victorydave here > Ford stepped up to the plate in 07/08 , My 08 F450 is rated to pull a 5er of 20K with a 4.30:1 Axle ratio and could go to 24K if I'd picked the optional 4.88:1 axle and yes the F550 has a 5 sump'n axle to even pull more! vixtorydave

RE: What are the cheapest toy haulers you can buy?

A really old used up one, the one somebody shows you 2 weeks after buying your current unit, The one the manufacture is not making anymore, The one where the manufacture has went out of business, the one the dealer down the road from you is sell at a 32% discount and you only got 25% from your dealer in another state, the one the bank repo'd and wants it off their lot.... loaded question.... loaded answers. grin victorydave

RE: Ford vs Freightliner

Almost did what your considering... Price was an issue because I was looking at custom interiors, The standerd stuff didn't thrill the wife. It would have been my only vehicle (besides my bikes) and I couldn't see driving that to the store Plus I like my 4X4's. I Looked at the new Ford's and you can get all you'll ever need in a 450 of 550 and still use it for a people hauler and take it anywhere to get fixed. The bigger trucks do get mileage simular to the big diesel pick-up trucks and if bigger is better to you why not? I know everything on my F450 will cost more but can you imagine what a brake jop will cost on a Freightliner M2 and how few shops will work on them. and try a quick oil change place !!!!!! victorydave

RE: 5ver TH length

I have a 41 "All American Sport" and do have some trouble finding big enough spots at alot of state camp grounds. My garage is only 10 ft and now wish I had a bigger garage and a smaller living area but I got what I got so everyone can join me! I do belong to "Out Door Adventure" & "Coast to Coast" and rarely have problems at those C.G's. victorydave

RE: Is this delamination??

I agree, it doesn't look quite like delamination but it's very hard to tell with the sticker over it. For me if the price is right I could force myself to buy it. It's gonna have to be fixed sooner or later, I'd make the guy take a sharp razor knife to cut the decal by that bulge, then take a hair dryer to it and peel back the sticker to get a better look. Remember, delamination can't usually be fixed and it can get worse! I did see an successful repair done on a C class my buddy bought, it was 3 foot sq caused buy water leaking thru stove vent above the damaged,(everybody check you caulking every year) water got into the layers of fiberglass and froze. I told him to take it to a boat shop and have it patched, then put a sticker over it. You could still see it but the boat shop did a real good job on it, they ripped of the top layers and layed some new glass in to it. I'll bet theres a window just above that bulge or it could be coming from the roof cap area? Anyhoot that must be fixed immediately. victorydave

RE: Where to sell my toyhauler

Here in Michigan we have a couple of "RV Brokers" they seem to have the best luck???? If you have (what the public preceives) as a hot RV then finding a high traffic corner to set it on it should be no problem. Having an extended warranty also makes some at ease. Now here in Michagan we have a 3rd world ecnoomy and you can't sell nothing without almost giving it away! GOOD LUCK ! victorydave

RE: F250 CC 6.0L Diesel & Fuzion 393

Let me see a Fuzion 393 weighs 13 K empty, add water, gas, toys, clothes, tools and all the other stuff you'll wanna to carry you should top out at around 15.5 K which makes you over weight per Ford's (250/350) SRW, SUPER CAB 4X4 IS RATED AT 15 K FOR A 5TH WHEEL. Your bigger tires makes you loose about 15% of your Torque and unless you have a 4:88:1 axle ratio to make up for that loss the hills are out for you. I don't know how a truck that lifed and tired can hook-up a 5er without hit the bed all the time??? Flat bed maybe?? If you daired run it with the trailer jacked-up in the front the first really hard stop you make should/could make you the late/great sump'n. I think your doomed !!! victorydave
